Background of the Study
Digital resource categorization involves organizing and classifying digital content to facilitate efficient retrieval and usage. At Kano University of Science and Technology, the accuracy and intuitiveness of resource categorization significantly affect the ease with which users locate scholarly materials (Lawal, 2023). An effective categorization system ensures that digital resources are systematically arranged, reducing search times and enhancing the overall user experience. This study examines the digital resource categorization process, focusing on its alignment with user expectations and the evolving needs of academic research. The benefits of clear categorization are well documented, with impacts on user navigation efficiency and resource discovery noted in recent studies (Musa, 2024). Nevertheless, challenges such as outdated metadata, misclassification, and poor interface design may hinder the intended benefits of digital categorization. By analyzing user feedback and system performance, this research aims to provide actionable insights into optimizing resource categorization, thereby fostering a more accessible academic library environment (Babatunde, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of digital resource categorization to streamline access to library resources, Kano University of Science and Technology faces significant challenges in ensuring that digital materials are accurately organized. Users frequently encounter difficulties in locating specific items due to misclassification and outdated indexing protocols (Lawal, 2023). These issues lead to inefficient use of the digital library and heightened user frustration. Additionally, the lack of a dynamic categorization system that adapts to evolving resource types further compounds the problem. The study, therefore, aims to identify the specific shortcomings in the current system and assess their impact on user access and satisfaction, ultimately proposing solutions to improve the categorization process (Babatunde, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the effectiveness of current digital resource categorization.
To identify challenges related to misclassification and outdated indexing.
To recommend strategies for optimizing digital categorization.
Research Questions:
How effective is the current categorization system in facilitating resource access?
What are the main challenges experienced by users?
How can the system be improved to enhance usability?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it directly addresses the challenges of digital resource organization, a critical factor in academic research efficiency. The findings will offer guidance for improving indexing and classification strategies, thereby enhancing user experience and resource accessibility. The recommendations will be instrumental for librarians and system developers in refining digital categorization processes to better serve academic communities (Musa, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is confined to assessing digital resource categorization within Kano University of Science and Technology and does not extend to other digital library systems or physical categorization schemes.
Definitions of Terms:
Digital Resource Categorization: The systematic classification of digital materials.
Resource Indexing: The process of organizing information for efficient retrieval.
User Accessibility: The ease with which users can locate and utilize resources.
